For our neighbors near Portland

My stats for this blog show me that people have been searching for the Eat Local Week event in Portland, which sent me off on a search myself to see what it’s all about. As far as I can tell, The Sustainable Business Network of Portland is sponsoring Eat Local Week, July 4-11 in Portland, during which area residents are encouraged to support their local restaurants and buy a portion of their groceries from neighborhood food co-ops, grocery stores and local farmers markets. A percentage of proceeds from Eat Local Week will benefit Oregon Food Bank.

I admit, I’m just doing a search and quickly scanning in order to write this post, but info about the event seems kind of spotty. I did, however, find another “Eat Local” website for the Portland area that seems to have some really great resources. (Added them to the links section of the sidebar.)

I also found a precursor event taking place next Wednesday, June 25th at the First Unitarian Church (1011 SW 12th)… SBNP and Burgerville are presenting an evening with author Michael Shuman (opens a PDF), who will discuss “how communities are increasingly feeding themselves, and simultaneously reaping huge economic, environmental and social benefits.” Before the lecture, the president of New Seasons Market, Lisa Sedlar, will talk about “the importance of a thriving, healthy local food system, including the relationship between area farmers and residents with local restaurants, farmers markets, grocery stores and food co-ops.” Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

At the Oregon City Farmers Market this Saturday, June 21, OSU Master Gardener Bill Bradley will present a talk entitled “Secrets of the Tomato Master”.
