Attn: proponents of backyard chickens in Salem! At the very end of tonight’s (May 24, 2010) city council meeting, the city councilors will vote whether to bring back the chicken ordinance (link opens a PDF).
Chicken In The Yard members are asking for residents who support backyard chickens to attend:
“You will see from the agenda that the evening will start at 6:30 pm with a Salem Housing Authority meeting followed by an Urban Renewal Agency meeting. I think these will both be short. Then the City Council meeting will start and I will speak briefly at the beginning (Item #3 – Public Comment on Agenda Items). This is when I will ask supporters in the room to raise their hands. Please come and show your support at Salem City Hall, 555 Liberty St NE, Room 220, at 6:30 pm on Monday, May 24 – and bring friends!”
My comment… wow, tough ordinance. I think it’s a crying shame that it’s so restrictive, but I hope the residents in favor of backyard chickens will show their support if this is the way it has to be.

Also for Salem residents… have you seen the Salem Sustainability website? There’s some nice information there about various city initiatives and resources, and there’s an event calendar that sorely needs some attention from the public (there’s nothing on it right now). People are invited to promote their local environmental and sustainability-related community events.
