The Jaunty Gnome on Etsy

By

The other day I was browsing through the local Etsy shops and came across The Jaunty Gnome, based in Corvallis. I knew I had to share it here, because… well, just look: Is this not adorable?! Shop owner, Stephanie, writes a cute little story/description for each listing, such as the two “Nursery Visiting Gnomes” above: This sweet pair had hitched a ride to the nursery in the back of the minivan, and now they have had a whole new world opened up to them. Their garden environment is fairly limited in color and texture, so to see new things growing in pots just waiting to come home for planting…well, they see endless possibilities. They understand now that some humans tend to go to the nursery very often during the warm season to look at possibilities…sometimes every weekend! I have to say… I want one! Etsy is a great way...

By
corvallisartisansmarket

The Corvallis Artisans Market Boutique is open daily at 132 SW 4th Street in Corvallis, through December 24th. I e-mailed market director, Sheri Dover, and asked her a few questions. Here’s what she had to say! Tell us about the history of the market. Corvallis Artisans Market was conceived out of the belief that a strong downtown builds a strong community. I believe that when a community has something central that all of the members can participate in and internalize as something that they belong to, that the community is strengthened and the quality of life is enhanced for everyone.  I had several goals in mind when I was planning the market. With the market I hoped to: Create economic opportunities for both emerging and more established artists. Enhance what was already happening downtown to create a public market that is appealing and accessible to all members of the...

Shearing Day

By
Shearing Day

I have a hobby that utilizes local resources — I spin wool into yarn. Luckily, Oregon is rich with people who raise sheep and other fiber producing animals. Of course, there’s beautiful, natural wool from all over the place, along with independent dyers who create amazing batts and rovings… so I don’t always buy only locally. It’s too tempting. Other spinners know what I’m sayin’. Still! The resources are here. There are also many spinners and yarn producers here, so if you’re into knitting or crochet or other yarn-centric hobby, it’s possible to buy locally! Anyway, today was shearing day out at the Bellwether Wool Company, so we headed over to watch the action. There were about four people wrangling the sheep in the pens, queuing them up for their turn on the shearing platform. Then, the shearer brings one onto the platform and goes to work.
