Backyard Chickens

Congratulations, Salem

Congratulations, Salem

After January 1, 2011, Salem residents will be allowed to keep up to three hens in their yards. IT’S ABOUT TIME! Shame the city had to make it so onerous for everyone though: Because city staff have been directed to start a chicken licensing system that will require IT programming, training of third-party vendors, creation of forms, and altering the city website, implementation of Ordinance Bill 19-10 will take longer than the typical 30 days required for enactment after a bill’s second reading. Vendors, forms, licensing ($50!) (is that annually?), inspections? Sheesh. Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine. I don’t often see the black helicopters, but I sometimes wonder how much longer we will be allowed to produce our own food in our backyards. Salem residents, congratulations on finally seeing this through a council vote. Those of you who choose to raise hens will find them quite...

Notes for Salem today

Attn: proponents of backyard chickens in Salem! At the very end of tonight’s (May 24, 2010) city council meeting, the city councilors will vote whether to bring back the chicken ordinance (link opens a PDF). Chicken In The Yard members are asking for residents who support backyard chickens to attend: “You will see from the agenda that the evening will start at 6:30 pm with a Salem Housing Authority meeting followed by an Urban Renewal Agency meeting. I think these will both be short. Then the City Council meeting will start and I will speak briefly at the beginning (Item #3 – Public Comment on Agenda Items). This is when I will ask supporters in the room to raise their hands. Please come and show your support at Salem City Hall, 555 Liberty St NE, Room 220, at 6:30 pm on Monday, May 24 – and bring friends!” My...

Our girls were in the local paper!

Our girls were in the local paper!

The Gazette Times ran a story about city chickens on October 4th and quoted my husband and me. There were photos – including one of my husband feeding our hens — in the paper version but they unfortunately did not make it into the online version. Talking about being newbie chicken-raisers  is enjoyable, but there’s a lot to it that can’t be communicated in the limited space of a newspaper article. If you are interested in raising hens, I would not hesitate to encourage you to look into it, but really look into it and plan ahead. For instance, with regards to building a coop — we did not plan far enough in advance and ended up buying all our materials, rather than obtaining recycled items, which would have been my preference. We were just taken off guard by how suddenly they needed to be out of the house,...
