Quarter Cow

Quarter Cow

Well, this will be an adventure… picked up a quarter of a cow today from Bald Hill Farm in Corvallis. There is a LOT of ground beef here. We hardly ever buy ground beef, so we’ll have to come up with some ways to use that. It’ll make some good pots of chili this winter!

May 9: Local Food & Farming Forum at Midway Farms

I picked up this flier recently at Midway Farms and then found it online at The Farm Forum, which is a new blog/project focused on the Corvallis & Albany area: The Local Food and Farming Forum is an ever-evolving project that is designed to really connect the Corvallis and Albany community with their local food producers. While there are many local food groups at work on similar projects, I feel that this one is different because it brings people to the direct source of their food: the farm. Looks like a fantastic event!

Rockin' the staycation, farm style

Rockin' the staycation, farm style

Last summer, with gas prices at an all-time high, staycations were suddenly in vogue.  The idea is to stay home and just relax and have fun in your local area, attend local events, or even just hang out in your yard & read a book. Alternatively, you could drive a little distance and camp or stay in a hotel or other lodging and enjoy that locality. Funny, these sound like my normal vacations! Anyway, in my internet wanderings, I came across Leaping Lamb Farm in Alsea, OR, and discovered that they offer a farm cabin stay – a perfect staycation idea for those of us around the valley! Our farm stay promises a retreat from the stresses of city life. Enjoy the privacy of a self-contained cabin, including: two bedrooms with queen-sized beds; a full bath; complete kitchen and eating area; large, airy living room with a double-futon couch;...

If anyone wants to drop me a line with details, send it to mwvlocal at gmail dot com. Meanwhile, I’ll keep searching online.

Laughing Duck Farm CSA

By

Laughing Duck Farm, located in Lewisburg, is still accepting applications for their CSA program, which started in the first week of June. Farmer Drew Mosher says he will pro-rate for the missed weeks and is looking at a lot of great stuff in the ground right now. For prices and a list of products head over to the website’s CSA page. Pick-up locations include Corvallis, Lewisburg, Newport and Portland. The program runs through October 31st. They also have an egg share that’s on a separate program — at a very reasonable price. Best of luck to the farm, and I hope some folks will sign up for this CSA. I think I will sign up if they’re still taking customers at the end of June!

Heavenly Harvest Farm CSA

By

We had a visit to the blog by Jim of Heavenly Harvest Farm. He commented on an earlier post about CSAs that Heavenly Harvest is still accepting CSA sign-ups. You can make your payment clear up until May 20th for the best price. Looks like they’ll accept payment after that, too, but it would be a little more. You can have a dozen eggs added to your box each week for just $66 for the entire season. That’s only $3 for a dozen large, free-range eggs from Turpen Farms in Corvallis each week. Good deal. Pick up options are as follows: Good Samaritan Hospital, Friday, 1pm to 4:30pm Heavenly Harvest Farm, Tuesday or Friday, 1pm to 7pm Corvallis Market, Wednesday, 8am to 1pm Beaverton Market, Wednesday, 3pm to 7pm Ecotrust Market, Thursday, 6pm to 8pm Eastbank Market, Thursday, 6pm to 8pm Corvallis Market, Saturday, 9am to 1pm Newport Market,...
