Weekend events

By

Don’t forget, this Sunday is the Cooped up in Corvallis event, and there is once again organic fertilizer for sale on Saturday at First Alternative on SE 3rd in Corvallis. Saturday is also the date of the Rhapsody in the Vineyard wine walk in downtown Corvallis. For $5 you get a glass and a wristband, scrip is extra (50 cents to $1 per taste). The event runs from 4 to 7pm and is being hosted by various locations downtown. This is a fun event, if a bit crowded, and it is a nice chance to sample wines from some local vineyards. Information: 758-9095 or www.downtowncorvallis.org (the site has a list of the wineries at each location so you can plan your route accordingly). I’ve got to laugh a little at the “wine glass neck-slings”, though. Honestly. There’s a pruning workshop on Saturday from noon to 4pm at the Linn...

Wine corks – what do you think?

By

In the last couple of days, I’ve visited the website of two wineries in our area and taken away two different messages about natural cork bottle stoppers. On one hand, we have Willamette Valley Vineyards in Turner, OR, whose founder, Jim Bernau has collaborated with Whole Foods markets to begin a cork recycling program. (I guess that’s the message?) On the other hand,...

Ask yourself why you do this

In early February there was a blurb in the Seattle Times about a Salem man who called off his attempt to eat only local foods for a year because he realized he was causing more damage to the atmosphere by driving “around the state” to shop. Well… okay. Driving around the state for your food does sound like a pretty bad idea. But, was it really necessary? And what about the other reasons for choosing local foods (when possible)? I admit, I don’t know Salem as well as I know the Corvallis/Albany area, but I have been trying to understand what this gentleman wasn’t finding close enough to home. I think that this aspect of local food advocacy can be a gray area, and we need to be informed consumers. Here are some of my thoughts on shopping locally: Let them come to you The Oregon Farmers’ Market Association...
