At the risk of being kind of obnoxious…

By

Buy local! I know, accidents happen to the best of us. But this is the kind of thing that just reinforces my intention to know where my food comes from and how it is raised and processed. Plastic foam trays have always had a big ick-factor for me, anyway. But maybe that’s just me…

Not sure you’ll be able to use it all?

Great article here about a small Portland family (two adults and a toddler), who purchase a quarter of a cow — grass fed and locally raised — and then wonder if they’ll really be able to consume all of it within a year. Very interesting read for anyone who has wondered if the cost savings would be worth it in the end! Edible Portland: One Woman’s Quest to Cook a Quarter Cow

Week 2 Roundup: June 1-7

By

What lovely things did the first week of June bring us? Eugenia at Culinaria Eugenius started to see some signs of life in her garden, despite the slow start to warm weather we’ve had here. Over at Greenscraps there is talk of local fish… in a can. It went into a casserole, complimented by farmers’ market zucchini and herbs from the garden. Rich MOMents made a spring quiche trio. Writing this post makes me hungry. I adore quiche, and am definitely going to try that recipe. The Lucky Ruggieros had some fabulous local chicken (from Afton Field Farm — I’ve sent them an e-mail to ask when the farm stand is open… this link doesn’t list the schedule. I’ll post when I...

Recipe of the Week: Russian Cream

The recipe of the week is up. It’s a dessert called “Russian Cream“, served with sliced strawberries, that I remember from childhood. I’m going to make this one very soon. (It also goes well with other types of berries.) Tomorrow I’ll have a re-cap of what everyone did for the challenge last week. Looking forward to it!
