Calling All Creative Types

I want to get some t-shirts created at Zazzle, but I don’t currently have time to design a cool image or logo. So… it’s contest time! Submit a design for a t-shirt (and maybe other items later) to mwvlocal at gmail dot com. The winning design will be put on t-shirts (and maybe other items later) which will be purchased through Zazzle.com. Winner will receive a free t-shirt and have their name published here and on my Twitter feed (don’t get excited, I only have 40 followers), and anywhere else I can think of to show my admiration. The design should have something to do with our theme of eating and buying locally. It should also incorporate our name — either “MWV Local” or “Mid-Willamette Valley Local”. I’ll also accept “Willamette Valley Local” as I think we’re kind of straying out of the mid-valley pretty regularly with our posts....

Living Culture television series

Living Culture television series

Living Culture is a monthly television series based in Salem that focuses on the food, gardening and culture of the mid-Willamette Valley. I’ve really enjoyed catching up with the segments that they have featured on their video archive page, and look forward to watching in the future!

GREETINGS

By

Wow, I remembered how to log in. Well, folks, I totally and completely dropped the ball on this site, and I apologize. I have nothing but excuses, and really, at some point after about two or three weeks, the guilt took over and turned into pure avoidance. Plus, all my stats told me that most people were reading from far-flung locations and were just getting here by searching for recipes. That was kind of a bummer. But! I’ve decided that there is way too much good info here, so I’m going to dust off the site, do a little updating and change its purpose. No more challenge — there’s no way I can keep up with it. However, there are a lot of inspiring local people who do wonderful things with the “eat local” ideals, so I know we’ll be checking in with them often. I’m also going to...

But we try so hard…

I leave my bags at home way too often, and I really don’t mean to. And every time they whip out the plastic, I’m smacking myself in the head. GAH. nataliedee.com

Go rafting. Eat local.

By

I’ve had two entries from the Whitewater Warehouse Rafting Blog saved on Bloglines since mid-May… they work with a local farmer, Russell Davis of Davis Family Farms, to provide their guests with “close-source” food offerings during their trips. That’s very cool, and I know from camping how a wonderful meal can just make your trip all the more special. In another post, a few days later, they mention the shortbreads they offer on their trips — provided by a Washington company called Outrageous Offerings. So, hey, you can… go rafting and stick to the challenge, people!

Catching Up

By

Just a couple of notes for today… First, I have been remiss in mentioning a few bloggers who have joined our challenge. A hearty welcome and a salute of our forks to Greenscraps, RichMoments, and Oregon Sunshine! Second, with one week until Memorial Day weekend, I’ve decided to come up with a casual posting schedule that I will do my best to follow. Here’s what it will look like: Monday: Recipe of the Week, mention any new resources Tuesday: Challenge roundup from the previous week (Sunday – Saturday) Wednesday: Links to articles or book reviews Thursday: Events or sites of interest Friday: Open posting of links, polls, checking in with sidebar links, etc. Weekend: Will probably take a break from posting and prepare new posts for the upcoming week Finally, once in a while when I load this blog, there is no link at the bottom for previous posts....

Reminder Day

By

I have declared today to be Reminder Day! • This Thursday, May 15, there is a lecture at OSU called “Eating Good in the Neighborhood: The Medical and Moral History of Dietary Localism” featuring speaker Steven Shapin from Harvard University. It’s at 7pm at the LaSells Stewart Center, C&E Auditorium. You can read the media release here. (Okay, that’s not so much a “reminder”, since I didn’t actually post about it in the first place — but I did have it on the calendar, which I did mention!) • By the way, don’t forget about our nifty 30 Boxes calendar, linked over there at the top of the sidebar. • On Friday, May 16, the Farms Feed Everyone benefit dinner is taking place at the First United Methodist Church in Corvallis. Check the calendar for a link. Deadline to RSVP is TODAY. • Finally, I’d really love to have some more participants in...

I started a calendar over at 30 Boxes where you can see upcoming events. It’s linked at the top of the sidebar as well. If you ever have something to be added to the calendar, please send an e-mail.

Earth Week and NY Times Magazine

By

This past Sunday, the NY Times Magazine had a Green Issue featuring “bold steps to make your carbon footprint smaller”. If you have the time, I urge you to check out the whole issue for some really interesting reading. One section I wanted to highlight, though, related to eating local and asked the question, “is eating local always better?” Well, from a carbon footprint standpoint, not always: It is the locavore’s dilemma that organic bananas delivered by a fuel-efficient boat may be responsible for less energy use than highly fertilized, nonorganic potatoes trucked from a hundred miles away. Even locally grown, organic greenhouse tomatoes can consume 20 percent more resources than a tomato from a far-off warm climate, because of all the energy needed to run the greenhouse. There are some steps we can take to reduce our impact, though — buy less packaging, and try to eat foods...
