Week 2 Roundup: June 1-7

By

What lovely things did the first week of June bring us? Eugenia at Culinaria Eugenius started to see some signs of life in her garden, despite the slow start to warm weather we’ve had here. She also had a bbq in week two that was quite rich in local products. (And congratulations, Eugenia, on graduating from your Master Food Preservation class! Woot!) Over at Greenscraps there is talk of local fish… in a can. It went into a casserole, complimented by farmers’ market zucchini and herbs from the garden. Rich MOMents made a spring quiche trio. Writing this post makes me hungry. I adore quiche, and am definitely going to try that recipe. The Lucky Ruggieros had some fabulous local chicken (from Afton Field Farm — I’ve sent them an e-mail to ask when the farm stand is open… this link doesn’t list the schedule. I’ll post when I...

King Estate opens MarketPlace for dads & grads

By

This Saturday, June 14, King Estate Winery will open their MarketPlace to the public in celebration of graduation and Father’s Day. (They say UofO graduation, but hey…) The MarketPlace — a seasonal, outdoor market featuring estate grown certified organic produce along with other local items — will be open from 11AM to 6PM to let people enjoy wine tasting, light fare and baked goods. King Estate Winery is located about 21 miles SW of Eugene, near the town of Lorane. * * * * Challenge note: I wanted to let everyone know that I decided to save the weekly round-ups for Friday. That will give bloggers more time to post about their prior week’s local eating efforts. So, tomorrow, look for the round-up for June 1-7. (Non-bloggers, send me those e-mails if you want to be included!)

Seeking guest entry

By

I’m looking for someone who will write a guest entry to review the CSA program they belong to, and their first boxes for the year. I’ll also take more than one volunteer, if the boxes are from different CSAs. Please send an e-mail to mwvlocal at gmail dot com.

Upcoming Events

By

Looking for something to do this weekend? Here are some ideas… Buy Local First Breakfast in downtown Corvallis, Saturday, June 7th. For details, see my prior post. Midway Farms will open their new barn this weekend. Located midway between Corvallis and Albany on Highway 20, they will be open from 10 AM to 7 PM both Saturday and Sunday to celebrate their new barn. There may be an egg carton coloring contest for the kids. (Info found on the Corvallis tourism site, but not the farm’s website. You might want to call before heading over.) The 99th Annual Lebanon Strawberry Festival starts tonight and runs through Sunday. Can’t quite tell from the site what the hours are. And, of course, there are always your local markets! If any of our readers have info on other local events this weekend or in the future, please leave a comment.

Week 1 Roundup!

By

It is finally time to have our first roundup. Okay, here’s how this is going to work! Each week, I will gather up posts and e-mails about what our participants have done the prior week, from Sunday to Saturday. Week 1 is therefore May 25 through May 31. If you’re signed up but didn’t make it last week (or if you are ME), we’ll catch up with you next time. Ready? As I knew she would, Pat at Cooking from the Market set a high bar in the first week. She kicked off Memorial Day with a barbecue featuring baby-back pork ribs from Wood Family Farms, along with a coleslaw with ingredients picked up from Heavenly Harvest. Rhubarb chutney made an appearance mid-week, and finally, with lovely bing cherries from Rick Steffens farm, Pat made a cherry clafouti. (UPDATE! My bad.) Not to be outdone, Eugenia at Culinaria Eugenius...

Recipe of the Week: Russian Cream

The recipe of the week is up. It’s a dessert called “Russian Cream“, served with sliced strawberries, that I remember from childhood. I’m going to make this one very soon. (It also goes well with other types of berries.) Tomorrow I’ll have a re-cap of what everyone did for the challenge last week. Looking forward to it!

Go rafting. Eat local.

By

I’ve had two entries from the Whitewater Warehouse Rafting Blog saved on Bloglines since mid-May… they work with a local farmer, Russell Davis of Davis Family Farms, to provide their guests with “close-source” food offerings during their trips. That’s very cool, and I know from camping how a wonderful meal can just make your trip all the more special. In another post, a few days later, they mention the shortbreads they offer on their trips — provided by a Washington company called Outrageous Offerings. So, hey, you can… go rafting and stick to the challenge, people!

Slow Food in Corvallis proving popular

By

Well! Congratulations to the organizers of Slow Food Corvallis — their first event this Sunday, June 1, is sold out! … However, we have experienced such heavy demand for participation in our kickoff event June 1 that, in order to ensure a good experience for all, and avoid overburdening our generous chefs and producers, we’ve had to close ticket sales. If you would like to participate in the non-food part of the event, during which we’ll learn about the Slow Food movement and gather input and ideas for future events and projects, you are welcome to come along to the UCC at 5:30 for the discussion. No ticket is required for this. If you’d like to be put on the e-mail list to receive notice of future events, send an e-mail to slowfoodcorvallis at comcast dot net. (I’m not going to link that e-mail because I wouldn’t wish the...

Edible Portland

By

I wanted to point you over to Edible Portland today, part of Edible Communities. Edible Portland, published by Ecotrust Food & Farms, has been around since June, 2006, so there is a lot of reading material for you to peruse here, not to mention several lovely recipes. (They had me at “hollandaise sauce”.) * * * * * * Don’t forget that Weekend in the Wine Country is this weekend — I haven’t been to many wineries around here, but I have been to Coelho Winery in Amity, which was a really nice (warm, friendly) experience. Can anyone else recommend particular wineries to visit? Leave a comment!

Slow Food comes to Corvallis

Slow Food comes to Corvallis

I received an e-mail this week from a representative of the recently established Slow Food Corvallis Convivium, about their kick-off event being held this next Sunday, June 1st. To read a great article about Slow Food and the local organizers, check out the May issue of the co-op Thymes (pg. 1 & pg. 5). Interested in food that is good, clean & fair? Join us to learn about Slow Food and sample local foods prepared by area restaurants.
