OSU videos teach gardeners to detect, manage fruit-damaging fly

By Tiffany Woods, 541-737-2940, tiffany.woods@oregonstate.edu Source: Amy Dreves, 541-737-5576, amy.dreves@oregonstate.edu CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University has created a series of short videos to teach gardeners how to detect and manage a fruit-damaging fly that might be in their yards. Filmed amid blueberry and raspberry bushes in her backyard, OSU Extension Service entomologist Amy Dreves demonstrates in the videos how to look for the spotted wing drosophila fly. This invasive vinegar fly was first documented in Oregon last year when it damaged berries and peaches. This year it has been reported at low levels in 15 counties in the state, including Benton, Linn, Jackson, Marion, Polk, Wasco and Yamhill, Dreves said. It has also been seen this year in California, Florida, Washington and British Columbia, though only California has reported damage to fruit. “But it’s still early in the fruiting season,” Dreves said. The fly is an economic threat...

Harry and Annette’s Fresh Fish

By
Harry and Annette’s Fresh Fish

I have been remiss by not posting about Harry and Annette’s Fresh Fish before now. How could I forget? We stopped in yesterday and found the most amazing, buttery, melt-in-your mouth smoked black cod. That was dinner last night, along with some bread, brie, and an Oregon Pino Gris from Oak Knoll Winery… and at this very  moment I am regretting encouraging my husband to take the last little bit of the cod to work for lunch. Drat! At Harry and Annette’s, you’ll find wonderful fresh and smoked fish, live crabs, smoked salmon pâté, and more. On our very first visit, Harry invited us into the back to see the smoker, clearly proud of his work and the fish that they offer in the shop — with good reason! We also discovered that as of this last weekend, the shop is offering selections from the Willamette Cheese Company, Sweet Briar...

Notes for Salem today

Notes for Salem today

Attn: proponents of backyard chickens in Salem! At the very end of tonight’s (May 24, 2010) city council meeting, the city councilors will vote whether to bring back the chicken ordinance (link opens a PDF). Chicken In The Yard members are asking for residents who support backyard chickens to attend: “You will see from the agenda that the evening will start at 6:30 pm with a Salem Housing Authority meeting followed by an Urban Renewal Agency meeting. I think these will both be short. Then the City Council meeting will start and I will speak briefly at the beginning (Item #3 – Public Comment on Agenda Items). This is when I will ask supporters in the room to raise their hands. Please come and show your support at Salem City Hall, 555 Liberty St NE, Room 220, at 6:30 pm on Monday, May 24 – and bring friends!” My...

Are you growing sage in your garden?

By
Are you growing sage in your garden?

I am, and I have a pretty limited range of uses. I like it with butternut squash. In fact, butternut squash ravioli with a light topping of crispy sage & browned butter is my idea of a nearly perfect dish.  What else. Oh, it’s good on turkey & in the dressing at Thanksgiving, of course. And then I just kind of forget it’s out there. Like “sage = fall” in my mind or something. But my sage plant is lovely and healthy and I really want to use what I’ve got growing in the garden! I was happy, then, to see this post from from Chocolate & Zucchini yesterday on 45 things to do with fresh sage, many of which would make the basis for a wonderful summer dinner. How about you, readers? Anyone have some additional ideas for fresh sage?

Lard. Yep, this post is about lard!

By
Lard. Yep, this post is about lard!

Lard…  I don’t think I’ve ever bought the stuff. Growing up, we had Crisco in the house, but I don’t think I’ve ever purchased Crisco in my entire adult life, opting to use regular butter or healthier oils for the rare bit of cooking or baking that I did. The connotations of lard have always been that it’s so bad for you. Pure pig fat, OMG!! But the reality is, it’s the hydrogenated aspects of lard and solid vegetable oils sold in stores that you want to stay away from. If it’s on a shelf instead of refrigerated, I tend to avoid. (We found one – expensive – exception when we were looking for something to season our cast iron pans. Spectrum Naturals makes a vegetable shortening from palm oil that is non-hydrogenated.) Plain old lard stored in the fridge has the healthy fats, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, as well...

Homemade Butter

By
homemadebutter

I made my own butter this week and I’ve been insufferably pleased with myself ever since. There’s something so satisfying about it, and it’s fantastically easy. Now, you don’t save any money by doing this unless you have a milk-producing animal, I guess! If you can get cream for little to no money, then this is hugely economical. Otherwise, not really. I’m lucky that I can purchase good butter from a dairy, where 1 lb costs the same as a quart of cream (both natural products, with no stabilizers, emulsifiers, additives, etc.) I’m not sure exactly how much butter would come from a quart of cream, I’ll have to plan to weigh it out someday. But, anyway, even if there’s no real cost savings… there’s still that satisfaction of making it myself, turning cream into butter and buttermilk. I followed the diy recipe on this “Butter through the Ages”...
