Look what I found

Look what I found

What timing — last night I was noodling around online, following links, and came across this postcard: It is apparently from an artist named Karen Kerney and the postcards, and a poster version, seem to be available from a variety of sources. I like the sentiment. It’s not too moony (though dancing in the street might be a bit much for me!), and it’s nothing earth shattering, just simple actions. I just wrote about this topic yesterday and found this the same day… maybe the universe is telling me I should follow through with the block party I’ve been thinking about.

Being Neighborly

By

When my husband and I purchased our home in North Albany last summer, we found ourselves moving in to quite an established neighborhood. Most of the families have been there for years, and some even own multiple properties along our little dead-end lane. Everyone is always at the ready with a wave and a smile,  and I think everyone has stopped by to chat or admire the chickens or let us know that there used to be a cherry tree in our yard and boy are they disappointed the previous owner tore it out. Well, shoot, so am I. (So we planted two new ones!) I think we’re both feeling a little pressure (entirely self-imposed, I’m certain) to make our garden something to be proud of, and one from which we can share. You see, all this buy local stuff is great, but it’s the community aspect to all...

May 9: Local Food & Farming Forum at Midway Farms

May 9: Local Food & Farming Forum at Midway Farms

I picked up this flier recently at Midway Farms and then found it online at The Farm Forum, which is a new blog/project focused on the Corvallis & Albany area: The Local Food and Farming Forum is an ever-evolving project that is designed to really connect the Corvallis and Albany community with their local food producers. While there are many local food groups at work on similar projects, I feel that this one is different because it brings people to the direct source of their food: the farm. Looks like a fantastic event!

2009 Buy Local First Breakfasts (Corvallis)

By

Almost missed this… (seriously, why can’t I find links about this event?) This year’s Buy Local First Breakfasts in Corvallis will be held on Saturday mornings, May 2nd, June 6th and July 4th. This event is co-sponsored by Corvallis Independent Business Alliance (CIBA), First Alternative Co-op and the Corvallis Odd Fellows. As far as I know — but again, I can’t find more info — it’ll be in the same location as last year, and at the same time. 7:30 to 9:30 AM at the Odd Fellowship Hall, 223 SW 2nd Street. Last year the cost was $5 per adult and $3 per child 12 and under, and $2-off coupons were available at select merchant locations in Corvallis. The cost is $6 per adult and $4 per child 12 and under. Discount coupons are available at participating businesses. If anyone’s got a correction on the above, please let me...

Earth Week, Farmers' Market, Hoo Haa!

By

Oh my! First things first… the Corvallis and Albany farmers’ markets are back this weekend. (Nice work on the site re-design, guys, looks great.) Both markets are open from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays, starting tomorrow. The Corvallis market is located on the north end of the riverfront at 1st and Jackson, while Albany’s is located at Ellsworth St SW & 4th St SW. Corvallis also boasts a Wednesday market, and I’m super excited for the changes this year. It will be held downtown on the south end of the riverfront, in the parking lot north of the skateboard park. Best of all, they’ll be open from 3-7pm starting this Wednesday, April 22. I’m so happy for the time change, it means I can actually go. * * * This week is Earth Week and OSU is celebrating in a variety of ways. * * * On the actual...

Rockin' the staycation, farm style

Rockin' the staycation, farm style

Last summer, with gas prices at an all-time high, staycations were suddenly in vogue.  The idea is to stay home and just relax and have fun in your local area, attend local events, or even just hang out in your yard & read a book. Alternatively, you could drive a little distance and camp or stay in a hotel or other lodging and enjoy that locality. Funny, these sound like my normal vacations! Anyway, in my internet wanderings, I came across Leaping Lamb Farm in Alsea, OR, and discovered that they offer a farm cabin stay – a perfect staycation idea for those of us around the valley! Our farm stay promises a retreat from the stresses of city life. Enjoy the privacy of a self-contained cabin, including: two bedrooms with queen-sized beds; a full bath; complete kitchen and eating area; large, airy living room with a double-futon couch;...

I’m a little late with this info as this Portland event starts today, but I still wanted to let you know about the OSU Seminar Series. These are just a few examples of the 30+ seminars being offered by OSU. There are even more seminars offered by other sponsors. Admission to the expo is free, with plenty of exhibitors, and it starts at noon today. If any MWV Local readers go to any of the seminars, or even to just the expo, I’d love to hear about it — guest post anyone?
