New local mustard company – tasting on Friday!

Mmmmmmm. Mustard! This is the truth: the “bio” line on my Twitter account used to say “I like mustard.” Come to think of it, I don’t really know why I removed that… Mustard! Not just mustard. LOCAL mustard, made with local ingredients like beer from Oregon Trail Brewery, local brown mustard seeds from Wild Garden Seed, and seasonal vegetables and spices from Gathering Together Farm. Sounds really good, right? Introducing Weinsteiger Mustard Co. The site is a little bare-bones at the moment, but owner/creator Rebecka Weinsteiger is working on it. Mainly, I want you to know about the site and the new company, because there is a tasting opportunity tomorrow night. Rebecka is hosting her first tasting trial tomorrow, Friday, March 27th from 5pm-7pm at the First Alternative Coop meeting room (right behind the Purple Moon Coffee Cart). First Alternative Coop is at 1007 SE 3rd Street in Corvallis....

In the News

I’ve got a few posts and updates waiting in the wings (with lots of thanks to people who have e-mailed) but find myself playing catch-up to life in general after being home sick for a couple of days. (And a desk full of work… what’s THAT about?!) In the meantime, here are a few links to articles you may find interesting. From the New York times: Is a Food Revolution Now in Season? and Eating Food That’s Better for You, Organic or Not In Kansas City, CSAs Grow in Popularity, as well as in Louisville, Richmond, and Rochester.

Getting Started

Getting Started

Yesterday I stopped at Noah’s for a decidedly un-local bagel and caught sight of a flier on their bulletin board for The Organic Homesteader. The Organic Homesteader is a small local business that will come out to your home and install and maintain an organic homestead garden in your backyard.  Their services are available in Corvallis and Eugene. From their site: We will custom design your own backyard mini-farm with your family size and preferences in mind.  You will have a bounty of fresh vegetables available throughout the growing season….and we will do the work for you! They also offer classes and consultations for people who prefer to do this on their own. Additionally, they offer care for backyard chickens, informal veggie and seed-saver swaps, and vacation maintenance and care services. If anyone out there has a testimonial, we’d love to hear about it. * * * * I’m...

Notes

By

By far, the most popular page on this blog is the one containing recipes, and the most popular recipe on the site is the goat cheese & spinach stuffed chicken breasts with caramelized shallot sauce. Mmm. Say that ten times fast. I’d like to start the recipes up again — maybe not weekly, but semi-regularly — and I’d love it if anyone would like to contribute recipes that utilize local ingredients. If you have a favorite foodie blog, feel free to share that, too, and I’ll include links in the recipe posts. (mwvlocal at gmail dot com) * * * * * * * * I’m currently working on a page of local resources for yarn and wool. (I figured I’d start with the craft that I know something about.) After that, I’d like to expand into other art & craft areas, but I’ll need help with those, so,...

Weekend events

By

Don’t forget, this Sunday is the Cooped up in Corvallis event, and there is once again organic fertilizer for sale on Saturday at First Alternative on SE 3rd in Corvallis. Saturday is also the date of the Rhapsody in the Vineyard wine walk in downtown Corvallis. For $5 you get a glass and a wristband, scrip is extra (50 cents to $1 per taste). The event runs from 4 to 7pm and is being hosted by various locations downtown. This is a fun event, if a bit crowded, and it is a nice chance to sample wines from some local vineyards. Information: 758-9095 or www.downtowncorvallis.org (the site has a list of the wineries at each location so you can plan your route accordingly). I’ve got to laugh a little at the “wine glass neck-slings”, though. Honestly. There’s a pruning workshop on Saturday from noon to 4pm at the Linn...

Chickens arrive at MWV Local HQ

For those that don’t follow my other blog… behold my first attempt at backyard chickens & the most local of local eggs! (Well, eventually with the eggs.) We got six Barred Rock pullets & they are super cute. They seem to be quite hardy, which is great but isn’t keeping me from being a little anxious.

Daily Barometer write up of Empty Bowls event

By

OSU’s Daily Barometer had a great writeup on Monday about the Empty Bowls event this past weekend. More than 175 people attended and made donations — congratulations, volunteers! Empty Bowls is a project to fight hunger, personalized on a community level. The idea behind Empty Bowls is to remind people of all the empty bowls in the world today. In exchange for a meal, guests give a suggested minimum donation. The meal proceeds are all then given to a local hunger-fighting organization, such as a soup kitchen or OSU’s very own Emergency Food Pantry. Empty Bowls events can be sponsored by local artists, community service organizations, churches or schools.

Calling All Creative Types

By

I want to get some t-shirts created at Zazzle, but I don’t currently have time to design a cool image or logo. So… it’s contest time! Submit a design for a t-shirt (and maybe other items later) to mwvlocal at gmail dot com. The winning design will be put on t-shirts (and maybe other items later) which will be purchased through Zazzle.com. Winner will receive a free t-shirt and have their name published here and on my Twitter feed (don’t get excited, I only have 40 followers), and anywhere else I can think of to show my admiration. The design should have something to do with our theme of eating and buying locally. It should also incorporate our name — either “MWV Local” or “Mid-Willamette Valley Local”. I’ll also accept “Willamette Valley Local” as I think we’re kind of straying out of the mid-valley pretty regularly with our posts....

Chickens in the Yard (C.I.T.Y.) – Salem

If you’re in Salem, your help is being requested by the group Chickens in the Yard (C.I.T.Y.) on Monday night, March 9th. C.I.T.Y. is a group of citizens working to convince the Mayor and City Councilors to adopt an ordinance that would allow residents of Salem to keep a few backyard hens as pets and for eggs. On Monday evening at 6:30pm, the City  Council will be hearing testimony about the proposed zoning change and will vote on wording of the ordinance. They are asking for residents to help fill the Council Chambers during the meeting to show your support. (Council Chambers, Room 240, 555 Liberty St SE, Salem). Read more about C.I.T.Y.’s goals at their website and also see this video segment at Living Culture. Good luck, Salem!
